Company History

From FORMATION methods (Fm) to BLOC / 2003-Present

2003 - Herschell Hamilton and Mike Carpenter found FORMATION methods (Fm) in response to a need in the marketplace for a real estate development services firm that could provide clear direction to clients on how to initiate, entitle, finance, and successfully complete real estate development projects.

Hamilton, having worked as an investment banker, with a private equity firm, and served in two public sector administrations; and Carpenter (a licensed architect), having spent 23 years delivering complex development and construction projects for clients throughout the southeast United States, brought their respective professional skills and experiences to bear for clients.

2004 - Partners, Hamilton and Carpenter, develop a strategic plan that calls for a majority of the company’s development services to be performed on behalf of clients. They also establish strategic partnerships with large development and construction services companies to expand the firm’s reach into new markets and initiate projects throughout the region.

2005 - Dr. Roy Keith joins the company as Chairman of the Fm Advisory Board. The company targets cities throughout the southeast US, and initiates a roster of development projects in Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile, AL, Chattanooga, TN, Tampa, FL, and Washington, DC.

Fm registers with Central Contractors Register (CCR) as a small disadvantaged business (SDB).

2006 - Fm founders partner with Clarence Wadkins, another registered architect, and form the Washington, DC office of Fm-Atlantic.

2008Fm partners respond to the economic recession by recognizing a need to broaden the company’s services platform and geographic reach. They, in-turn, explore strategic alliances with national construction services firms and develop a relationship with Chattanooga, TN based EMJ Corporation. Founded in 1968, EMJ built over 500 million square feet of construction projects located across the nation. EMJ is the builder of record on all types of projects including retail, distribution centers and warehouses, office buildings, lifestyle/mixed-use development, hotels/multi-family, churches, educational facilities, entertainment/sports, medical, parking structures, major renovations, and wind energy. EMJ maintains additional offices in Boston, Dallas, and Sacramento, CA.

2009Fm registers with the Minority Business Enterprise Center (MBEC), UAB Minority Register.  Fm also is certified as a Small Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) with the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, South Regional Minority Supplier Development Council (SRMSDC), Birmingham Construction Industry Authority (BCIA), EarthCraft House Builder (Green/Sustainability), and Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).

Fm-Atlantic secures it’s designation as a Local, Small, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (LSDBE/CBE)) in the District of Columbia.

2009 – The partners form BLOC Global Services Group of companies as a successor to Fm. The formation of BLOC responds to a need in the marketplace for a well capitalized diverse, development and construction services firm to design, build, manage, develop, and finance complex development and construction projects. The company provides a comprehensive suite of services to large public and private sector organizations.

2010BLOC is initially licensed to do business in the states of AL, GA, TN, TX, VA, and the District of Columbia (D.C.), and is positioned to respond to growing demand from public and private sector clients to add diversity to their qualified construction service procurement methods. The company establishes additional affiliate offices in the cities of Boston, Chattanooga, Dallas, and Sacramento.

The partners also found BLOC Global Communities, a non-profit consultancy, to work with domestic and international communities to solve the problems of chronic neighborhood decline, and develop programs to increase the competitiveness of neighborhoods in their respective cities and regions.

FORMATION methods is rebranded as BLOC.
